CHAPTER 12
System Administration
This chapter describes basic information about how to perform common system
administration tasks on your OpenLinux system. Although the information
should be helpful for new Linux users, it is not intended to provide a comprehen-
sive guide to the topics covered. For more detailed information, review the sec-
tion “Bibliography for System Administrators” on page 189. In addition, you will
find technical guides on the Caldera Systems Web site and the Linux online
resources mentioned in the table that begins on page 12.
The Initialization Process
Understanding how the OpenLinux operating system starts up can be a great help
in problem-solving, preparing for strong security, and simply understanding how
things work on your system.
OpenLinux is based on a UNIX System V initialization system, so this process
may be familiar to you if you have worked with other SysV UNIX systems.
After the Linux kernel is started by the LILO boot manager or Master Boot Pro-
gram located in the Master Boot Record, the following steps occur, under the
control of the Linux kernel:
1.
The kernel initializes its own internal systems.
2.
The init program is started.
